Three Centers Practice
The Enneagram describes three centers of intelligence: body, heart, and mind. We tend to rely on one center to act as our primary filter for experience, taking in information through sensing, feeling, or thinking, and we tend to neglect the other two. The problem is that if we’re led by just one center, we over-rely on it and often ignore messages from the others.
I’ve met people who lead with the mind center, all their energy going to analyzing, planning, and gathering information in an effort to understand their experience. This can lead to a neglect of the body and the heart centers, leaving people without access to their innate intuition and true feelings. If we lead with the heart center, we allow our emotions to dictate our actions—often without the support of the mind or the body. Leading with the body often means we make a gut-level decision and then do mental and emotional gymnastics to rationalize it. All three paths can cause anxiety, inner conflict and confusion, and a sense of not truly knowing or understanding yourself.
The real sweet spot is if we can bring all three centers on board—this alignment and integration gives us the most access to our own perceptions and act from a place of balance and wholeness.
Inspired by the three enneagram centers of intelligence, this guided practice focuses attention on each of your centers in turn—gut, heart, and mind—and allows you to embody the experience of linking all three together.
It’s 8 minutes long and you can practice it anywhere, anytime.
